When I was a little girl my great grandmother on my mother's side died on Christmas Eve.
Grandma used to live in the apartment next door and I was with her when she answered the phone. I remember her stricken reaction and desperately wanting to make her feel better.

I also remember how the family got together and helped her buy a last minute plane ticket so she could go to her mother's funeral, and though there was a terrible sense of loss, there was a great deal of care and warmth.
